The Weeden House, built by H.C. Bradford in 1819, is Alabama's oldest building open to the public. It was once owned by Associate Justice of the Supreme Court John McKinley.  However, it is better known as the birthplace of 19th century poet and artist Maria Howard Weeden, whose poetry and paintings captured the essence of nineteenth-century Southern culture.

Listed on the National Register of Historic Places, the Weeden House is the only home in the Twickenham Historic District open as a museum and is a superb example of Federal architecture with elaborate interior and exterior detailing, including a leaded-glass fanlight highlighting the front door.

Additionally, the Weeden House Museum is the only Huntsville, Alabama landmark featured in the 2005 book, "Traveling Literary America, A Complete Guide to Literary Landmarks", by B.J. Welborn.

Ms. Barbara Scott, Director of the Weeden House Museum is known for her gracious and animated tours.  She concentrates on historical information of the Weeden House, Howard Weeden and the city of Huntsville.  Additionally,

  • The tours focus on how people during the Civil War survived, and about individuals and groups who responded differently to their physical and social environments during the Civil War.

  •  The life of Marie Howard Weeden is introduced to the students, as they learn how this poet, artist, and plantation owner used the conflict of the Civil War to record historical events.

  • The students will learn how Marie Howard Weeden used languages, literature, the arts, architecture, traditions, beliefs and values to contribute to the development and transmission of culture.

  • The students will view the art of Marie Howard Weeden who was an artist and poet. They will learn how she painted exquisite portraits and captured the spirit of her model as she transcended the cultural barriers of her time.
